New Beginnings

Today was officially the first day of my fourth semester at BYU. I kicked off the day with a visit to my advisor, to make sure that the plan I've laid out for myself is on track... apparently it is. I think she was a little overwhelmed by the four page print out I have of my progress so far by semester, along with every single class that I plan to take for my major (Communications, emphasis Public Relations) and both minors (International Development and Nonprofit Management), goals for each semester, and what I would like to be doing for work/internships and volunteering during each of those segments of time. I'm too embarrassed to admit how much time I spent on that spreadsheet thingy. But I'm even more embarrassed to tell you how much satisfaction I get out of seeing that in front of me... my ambitions all laid out like a how-to guide. Oops, I just did. Not going to lie, it's kind of ridiculous.

Anyways, I'm registered for 17 credits:

- World Civilization since 1500
- Honors Writing: Shakespeare on Film
- Honors Religion: The Teachings of Joseph Smith
- Media Laws and Ethics
- Advanced French Grammar
- Book of Mormon pt. 1

It should shape up to be a pretty interesting semester. I'm retaking the Book of Mormon class, in part to try to better the B I got during my first semester here... but also because I loved the class the first time around and I know that it's different with every professor, so I'd like to get even more insights from a new professor. There are only 7 people in my Shakespeare class. I haven't been to French yet, but it's the class that I'm supposed to be able to challenge 16 lower-division credits with... so we shall have to see how that turns out. Sheesh, if that goes through and I follow my plan of doing the spring and summer terms, I will skip straight to senior status (in credits) by the beginning of next year (my junior year).

The last of my classes is a Nonprofit Management practicum for my minor. It involves an internship with a nonprofit in the community. Before Christmas I applied with the United Way but was turned down (sad day), but I recently applied with HELP International, which just so happens to be a program I've been stoked on for a while. They send volunteers overseas to do development work, and I've had my eye on a country director position for some time now (see, it falls into my plans in the spring/summer of 2012, when I intend to do that as my International Development internship credit). Anyways, I interviewed this morning and she offered me the position on the spot... unpaid, but exciting nonetheless. I know that I'll be way happier at HELP than I would have been at United Way (not to knock the work that they are doing there), but the HELP internship really just is the PERFECT blend of my areas of study, not to mention the things that I am most passionate about.

Mind you, this is in addition to the internship that I already have, as a marketing assistant with BYU Athletics, being President of the Canadian Club, a French volunteer at the Missionary Training Center, and my intention of being more involved with the BYU Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (On my chart, my goal is to be President my senior year... seriously, I have a problem).

Yup, it's going to be a busy semester.
